ants

there is a colony of ants

migrating across my paper

an el niño of ants

not fire ants

nor carpenter ants

not skullsucking mob ants (like in indiana jones)

just ants

moving quietly across my paper

like lemmings

or pilgrims

or mothers

on a mission

i am not going to bother them

or ask them their purpose

or offer direction

because

they told me

they are

“just ants”

but

i do not believe them
